Causeway again ''world's longest bridge''

The Lake Pontchartrain Causeway is again the owner of the title, "world's longest bridge." Chinese officials claimed that a new bridge opened last week was the new champ with a length of 26 miles, two miles longer than the Causeway. Officials with the Louisiana bridge cried foul, and pointed out that while the Chinese bridge had 26 miles of roadway, most of the length is in a huge curve, covering far less distance when measured point-to-point. "We'd wondered about the way the Chinese bridge was calculated," said Causeway General Manager Carlton Dufrechou.  "It curves, and it's got a third spoke.  They did use the aggregate length, which appears to be 26 miles." The record-keepers at Guinness agree. Guinness has clarified the category as "world's longest bridge continuously over water," a title the Causeway again holds. The record-keeping organization has also created a category, "Longest bridge over water (aggregate length," ) for which the Chinese bridge now holds the record. "One way or the other, it's good to retain the title.
