Flood waters of the Mississippi River threaten a large oil refinery complex in Baton Rouge, May 13th. Flood waters from the Mississippi River pour over a levee on the Yazoo River, a tributary to the Mississippi River, north of Vicksburg, Miss. Water diverted from the Mississippi River spills through a bay in the Morganza Spillway in Morganza, La., Saturday, May 14. Water from the inflated Mississippi River gushed through a floodgate Saturday for the first time in nearly four decades and headed toward thousands of homes and farmland. Houseboats are secured to a tree due to water rising on the Atchafalaya River on May 15, in Henderson, La. Giant whirl-pools the size of cars develop along the Atchafalaya River due to Morganza flooding, May 15, 2011. Almost six years ago Katrina caused major destruction for much of Louisiana. That was mother nature, but this time it's part nature and part man. The Corp of Engineers opened the Morganza Spillway to divert water from heavily populated New Orleans and Baton Rouge easing pressure on the levees in the hope of avoiding potentially catastrophic floods. Floodwaters could reach up to 20 feet over the coming weeks, and some residents say they're angered that officials decided to spare Baton Rouge and New Orleans by diverting water to the basin. We can only hope and pray that the people of these areas won't lose everything, and can rebuild.
