About one-third of adults in 12 states weigh so much, they are considered obese -- not just overweight, but obese -- with Mississippi topping the list. This is the eighth consecutive year that Mississippi has had the highest percentage of obese adults in the country. Of the 30 states that have the highest rate of adult obesity, 26 are in the Midwest and the South.

That's the word from the Trust for America's Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, which annually co-author a report that tracks the percentage of obese adults state-by-state based on data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The state with the lowest rate of obesity is Colorado. Here's a shocking fact: Not a single state had an obesity rate above 20 percent in 1995, but today all 50 states have topped that number.

The top 10 fattest states in the U.S. and percentage of obese adults:

  1. Mississippi: 34.9 percent
  2. Louisiana: 33.4 percent
  3. West Virginia: 32.4 percent
  4. Alabama: 32 percent
  5. Michigan: 31.3 percent
  6. Oklahoma: 31.1 percent
  7. Arkansas: 30.9 percent
  8. Indiana and South Carolina (tie): 30.8 percent
  9. Kentucky and Texas (tie): 30.4 percent

The top 10 skinniest states in terms of weight and percentage of obese adults:

  1. Colorado: 20.7 percent
  2. Hawaii: 21.8 percent
  3. Massachusetts: 22.7 percent
  4. New Jersey and the District of Columbia (tie): 23.7 percent
  5. California: 23.8 percent
  6. Utah: 24.4 percent
  7. New York, Connecticut and Nevada (tie): 24.5 percent
